Profile from Joe Edward Hatfield's University of Arkansas Profile Page
Joe Hatfield joined the faculty of the Department of Communication in 2020. He earned a PhD in Communication—in addition to graduate certificates in Digital Humanities and Critical Theory—from the University of Colorado Boulder. His research is situated at the intersection of rhetorical and cultural studies, with a focus on how marginalized communities leverage popular digital social media technologies to forge identity-based resistance movements. He is particularly invested in studying the relationship between rhetoric and new media in contexts of queer and trans public memorialization. To do so, he integrates a range of methodological frameworks, including critical/cultural rhetorical analysis, historiography, and experimental computational techniques emerging from the broader digital humanities.
