Jerry Hauser is professor emeritus of Communication and College Professor Emeritus of Distinction in Rhetoric. His research focuses on the history of rhetorical theory, the role of rhetoric in a democracy, and the interaction between formal and vernacular rhetorics in the public sphere.
His book publications include Vernacular Voices: The Rhetoric of Publics and Public Spheres (recipient of NCA’s Nichols Award in Public Address), Prisoners of Conscience: Moral Vernaculars of Political Agency (recipient of NCA’s Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Research in Rhetoric and Public Addressand RSA’s Distinguished Book Award), and Introduction to Rhetorical Theory. He is an NCA Distinguished Scholar and an RSA Fellow. Currently he edits Philosophy and Rhetoric.
Hauser holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
